When FMX Daredevils fly Samba… 11.03.2008

Breathtaking jumps and world renowned locations, spectacular stunts, the sound of engines and the rhythm of samba: the Red Bull X-Fighters Series 2008 promises a one-of-a-kind mix of extreme sport and unforgettable spectacle. At five locations, Mexico, Fort Worth (Texas), Wuppertal (GER) and Madrid, the tough newcomers to the sport will challenge the top four freestyle motocross riders to a duel in the sky.

In 2001 it was actually a skateboarding event that was to have taken place at the bullring in Valencia, but it turned out to be the start of one of the most spectacular motorcycle series of the world, the Red Bull X-Fighters. The Series began in 2007 and has grown into a worldwide event. Sport and spectacle, the two things that create the magic of freestyle motocross, are at the very heart of the tour, which kicks off April 4 in Mexico City’s Plaza de Toros in front of 42,000 ecstatic spectators.

Distinguishing each of the competition locations will be the general themes of the events: In Mexico, it will be characterized by the country’s bullfighting tradition; in Fort Worth, Texas, it will be the rodeo and in Madrid, again the bullfight. While the rhythm of Samba will dominate in Rio de Janeiro, the drone of giant machines will be heard in a quarry in Wuppertal, Germany.

What will remain the same is the challenge of the sport. Regardless of whether it’s the enormous bullrings or the Sambadrome in Rio, the striving and hard-hitting newcomers of the FMX world will challenge the Big Four like -- Mat Rebeaud (Switzerland), Robbie Maddison (Australia), Dany Torres (Spain) and Nate Adams (USA) – to a duel in the sky and a no-holds-barred competition for the prize money.

For the first time this year, and as a new and integral part of the show, the event will feature invited celebrities -- such as actors, directors and singers -- to serve as one of the five judges responsible for the show part.

In addition to the matches between the young challengers and established stars, the competition for the lost crown of FMX god Travis Pastrana will be front and center this year. The “American Wunderkind” topped the Red Bull X-Fighters Series in 2007 but has since left the sport to turn his talents to rally racing.

The hunt is on…
