Dragon and Unicorn win „Jump&Freeze“ 02.02.2008

Bringing a row of new records, this weekend the Tyrolean village of Westendorf was the host of a carnival classic. Also record breaking 10 000 spectators watched the event and the 1000th start in history of the sport.

What drives 120 people from Austria, Germany, Denmark, Bulgaria and Australia to jump into a pool filled with 300.000 litres of ice water? Why would six men spend hundreds of hours building an enormous dragon, that would be completely destroyed within seconds?

These questions could still not be answered after the 12th edition of „Jump&Freeze“ this weekend in the Tyrolean winter sport resort Westendorf. During this, by now world famous, fun sport event the contestants jump with skis or a snowboard dressed up or with self made vehicles into a gigantic pool built of snow as spectacular as possible.

During this year's distance jumping competition the best contestants all exceeded the standing record of 19,5 meters. This years best was Philipp Berger of Kelchsau with 21 meters followed by Stefan Schroll of Westendorf (20.5 meters)and Stefan Herzog of Gerlos (20 meters). Additionally, all three build in a summersault in to their jumps!

In the category of best dressed “Biene Maya und ihre Freunde” (Maya the bee and her friends) won in front of the team “Bauer sucht Frau (Farmer searching for a woman)” followed by Hanspeter Mayer of Kitzbühel dressed in Winnie Puh apparel, also jumping as the 1000th starter in the history of “Jump&Freeze”

Ready for an exhibition in a museum was the winning vehicle of the most anticipated category “crazy vehicle.” The Dragon of the Buchberg team was a hand crafted masterpiece until the second of its destruction, which could breath fire and move its wings. Not less impressive was the 2nd placed Unicorn of the “Pettnauer Bierkobolde” and the “Ghostbusters-vehicle” of the Ebbs Team. Among others the Simpson school bus, a train, a bus made of styrofoam almost of original size and an Egyptian pyramid including mummies.
